Acoustic correction of a multi-purpose hall with wooden ceilings

Project: Multi-purpose hall with visible wood-beamed ceiling
Size of the room: 200 m3
Acoustic issues: High reverberation times; Carrying out structural work impossible due to the nature of the ceilings

In multi-purpose halls, the main aim—from an acoustic point of view—is to ensure that all activities, including lectures, concerts, educational programmes and multimedia projections, run smoothly. When planning and designing acoustically comfortable settings, certain structural issues may arise, such as pitched ceilings with exposed wood beams or vaulted ceilings.

The proposed project involves a multi-purpose hall around 200 m3 in size, which has a pitched wood-beamed ceiling and is equipped with conference chairs and a stage. The results of the phonometric measurements show reverberation values that are too high, both in terms of sound perception (EDT) and the objective index (T30). The aim of the corrective work is therefore to achieve a lower reverberation time than the current one, which is 1.05 s at an average of 250-2000 Hz.

Taking into account the nature of the wood-beamed ceiling, two different possible ways of distributing suspended sound-absorbing elements were identified. The first possibility involves the installation of 16 50 cm Kubo sound-absorbing elements, to be suspended from the ceiling; the second involves the installation of 14 120x120x5 cm Silente sound-absorbing panels, to be suspended 30 cm from the ceiling. Both configurations result in a decrease of the average Tr to 0.58 s, with a sound level reduction of 2.81 dB.

Thanks to their fixing system with adjustable cables, which enables them to be applied to wood-beamed or vaulted surfaces, Caruso Acoustic’s suspended sound-absorbing products ensure greater installation flexibility. In addition, they can be customised in numerous ways, including by size, colour and print.
