Acoustic treatment of a wine bar with acoustic panels

Project: acoustic correction of a wine bar
Volume of the venue: 532 m³
Acoustic problem: elevated reverberation level with significant impact on the acoustic well-being of customers and staff

Wine bars are places for socialising and relaxing, where enjoying a good glass of wine is an all-round experience. Background noise inside these premises is a common obstacle that hinders communication and well-being, as customers are forced to raise their voices, inevitably increasing reverberation times as a result.

This case study demonstrates the correction of the acoustics carried out inside a 532 m³ wine bar. From the phonometric analysis carried out during the planning phase, reverberation times (Tr) were calculated and, subsequently, the best values achievable, based on how the area is used, were identified. In order to ensure an even distribution of the products used and a certain compositional flexibility, the designers opted to install a combination of ceiling-mounted sound-absorbing solutions and floor-mounted partitions.
The following table shows the reverberation time calculated in the venue before acoustic treatment and the subsequent calculations made after Caruso Acoustic sound-absorbing products were installed.

Average reverberation time without panels Average reverberation time with panels
2,21 s 0,92 s

The average reverberation time calculated in the room prior to the installation of panels was around 2.21 s. Assuming 20 Silente sound-absorbing panels were mounted to the ceiling (8 x 120x120x5, 10 x 240x120x5 and 2 x 240x60x5) and two D-Space acoustic floor-mounted partitions were installed, the average reverberation time would decrease from 2.21 s to 0.92 s (at an average of 250-2000 Hz), with a sound-level reduction of 3.80 dB. As you can see from the graph, based on the absorption coefficient of the products, determining the precise number of sound-absorbing panels needed to create a comfortable acoustic environment was possible.

The panels can be installed in a short period of time with very little impact on the standard service activities of the venue, which is very beneficial for managers from a financial point of view. In addition, thanks to the wide range of colours and customised prints for fabrics used to upholster the panels, Caruso Acoustic products compliment the aesthetics of the room in which they are installed, for a harmonious, well-balanced result.
