Acoustic design of a corporate training room

Project: acoustic treatment of a training room
Size of the room: 117 m³
Acoustic problem: poor speech intelligibility, high reverberation times

The world of work is constantly changing, which is why companies started to invest more and more in training their employees, promoting refresher courses to develop new skills. It is this context where there is a need for training rooms, specifically designed for teaching activities and workshops.

In a so-called training room, acoustics play a key role in ensuring an adequate level of comfort in terms of speech intelligibility and ease of understanding. The proposed case study covers with the acoustic design of a training room of a company, with a volume of approximately 117m3. On-site measurements returned high reverberation times (Tr): 2.18 s at an average of 250-2000 Hz. Taking into account the intended use of the room, it was decided to install sound-absorbing panels against the wall, along the perimeter of the room, and to insert two sound-absorbing totems to be placed at the diagonally opposite corners.

The following table and chart show the reverberation time calculated in the room before acoustic treatment and the subsequent situation following the installation of the sound-absorbing products:

Average reverberation time without panels Average reverberation time with panels
2,18 s 0,66 s

Therefore, by installing 8 Silente panels measuring 120x120x5 cm against the wall and two 2m high Menhir totems, a reduction in sound level of 5.15 dB can be achieved. The application of sound-absorbing material along the perimeter of the room aids the correct distribution of sound, allowing for a significant reduction in acoustic reverberation.

Caruso Acoustic’s acoustic solutions are ideal for teaching and learning environments, and thanks to the several customisation options they can meet even the most complex project requirements.
