The impact of acoustics in hairdressing salons: a case study

Hairdressing salons are environments in which the aesthetics and furnishings have been carefully thought-out, down to the last detail. However, an equally important factor is often overlooked: acoustics. Noise and reverberations – especially when there are several customers and various equipment is being used at the same time – can make for a chaotic and far-from-relaxing environment.

This case study focused on a hairdressing salon measuring approximately 287 m3. After an in-depth acoustic analysis that indicated a reverberation time (Tr) of 3.09 s, the installation of multi-sized sound-absorbing panels by means of various application methods was proposed:

  • 5 Silente sound-absorbing panels in various sizes (240 x 120 x 5 cm and 180 x 120 x 5 cm), suspended 30 cm from the ceiling
  • 6 wall-mounted Silente panels in various sizes (90 x 120 x 5 cm, 90 x 100 x 5 cm and 60 x 120 x 5 cm)

As indicated in the image, the average Tr post-installation decreased to 1.25 s with a sound level reduction of -3.95 dB, which significantly improved voice intelligibility and the acoustic comfort perceived by both the customers and staff.

This case study demonstrates how Caruso Acoustic’s sound-absorbing products – selected according to the acoustic analysis and overall style of the environment – can lead to an optimal end result both in terms of performance and aesthetics.
