Acoustic correction of a multipurpose room

Correzione acustica sala polifunzionale - Caruso Acoustic

Project: Medium-sized multipurpose room for didactic and conference use
Room volume: 630 m³
Acoustic problem: High reverberation times, not ideal for the different uses of the room

The multipurpose rooms in public environments, such as schools, universities and congress centres, are often situated in existing buildings characterised by special architectural and structural features, which sometimes are even binding for acoustic requalification interventions.

The following project concerns a multipurpose room of about 630 m³, previously set up with a carpeted floor and a ceiling lighting system. The room hosts teaching activities, but also information activities such as meetings and conferences.
At the design stage, by means of a phono-metric analysis, the current reverberation times (RT) have been identified before the acoustic treatment, as well as the result achievable after the installation of Caruso Acoustic sound-absorbing panels. Despite the carpeted floor, the acoustic absorption levels are not sufficient for the correct performance of the different activities taking place in the room. The result of the analysis is an average reverberation time (RT) of 1,66 s, at empty room. According to the indications provided by the DIN standard for teaching and speech activities, it has been set as goal the RT of 0,86s, at empty room, with a reduction of sound level of 2,85 dB.

Average reverberation time without panels Average reverberation time with panels
1,66 s 0,86 s

In order to obtain this result, 22 Silente acoustic panels of different sizes should be hung on the wall. The installation of sound-absorbing products follows a distribution logic, aimed at meeting the functional requirements demanded by the intended use of the room.
In this context, Silente panels should be installed on the side and back walls.

The goal of an acoustic requalification of multipurpose spaces is to meet the needs of a space, which daily accommodates a large number of people and whose configuration can change as necessary. The integration of additional sound-absorbing products on the floor such as Menhir and D-Space allows to best maximising the available space by easily replacing the products according to specific needs.
